Working Conditions Aboard the Michalis

On September 9, 2019, at 11:40 p.m., the cargo ship 'Michalis' experienced a mechanical failure while navigating the Aegean Sea, approximately nine miles south of Syros island. The vessel, with a crew of nine, was traveling from Lavrion to Limassol, carrying a load of stones at the time of the incident. The following morning, on September 10, the tugboat 'Kapetan Christos' along with the police vessel 'Leon I' and a Greek Coast Guard patrol boat responded to assist the disabled ship. They successfully towed 'Michalis' to safer waters near the eastern coast of Syros, where it was moored for necessary repairs at coordinates 37° 25.05' N 024° 58.52' E. A thorough inspection revealed a malfunction in the main engine cooling system, prompting the Syros Port Authority to impose a sailing ban on the vessel until the repairs are completed and a class certification is secured from the relevant classification society.
