Foss Maritime, headquartered in Seattle, has officially launched the first of three groundbreaking Arctic Class tugs, purpose-built for navigating some of the planet's most challenging environments. Recently christened, this innovative tug is set to embark on its inaugural mission to assist in an oil tow from South Korea to the frigid waters of the Alaskan Arctic. The vessel, named Michele Foss, was constructed at the Foss Rainier Shipyard in Oregon and celebrated its naming ceremony at the Foss Waterway Seaport in Tacoma, Washington. This modern tug is crafted to meet the stringent guidelines outlined in the ABS 'Guide for Building and Classing Vessels Intended to Operate in Polar Waters.' It boasts an ice class rating of DO, featuring a hull specifically engineered for polar conditions, complete with reinforcements for effective ice maneuverability. Additional certifications include ABS A1, SOLAS, and the Green Passport, ensuring that Michele Foss adheres to both safety and environmental standards.
