Mila Detained for Overloading in Brunsbüttel
On February 1, 2020, the cargo vessel 'Mila' was discovered to be significantly overloaded while navigating through the southern lock of Brunsbüttel, en route from Velsen to Szczecin. At approximately 9:30 a.m., authorities assessed the ship and found it carrying a substantial load of 3,360 tons of steel. This led to the commencement of an administrative offense procedure by local police, including the collection of a security deposit. Investigations conducted on board revealed that the vessel's seasonal minimum freeboard was deficient by eight centimeters, corresponding to an excess weight of roughly 80 tons. Consequently, the Department of Ship Safety enforced a sailing prohibition until the draught was rectified. To secure the ongoing procedure, a mandatory security deposit of €2,300 was imposed. After addressing the overloading issue, the 'Mila' successfully docked at the sailing ship pilings in the canal port of Brunsbüttel. It resumed its outbound journey on February 5 at 2 p.m. The vessel reached its destination in Szczecin on February 6 at 7:15 p.m., before continuing its voyage to Sołęsborg around 1:20 a.m. on February 7, with an estimated arrival time of 7 p.m.
