Bulker Incident Causes Severe Damage to Grain Loader in Santos

Feb 16, 2012 09:31

On the evening of February 14, 2012, at approximately 10 p.m., the bulk carrier 'Milagro' experienced a significant incident at the Guaruja Grain Terminals in Santos, Brazil. While maneuvering towards the terminal with the assistance of two tugboats, 'Milagro' inadvertently struck Grain Loader 3 with the wing of its bridge, leading to critical damage. The freighter suffered injuries to its port side bridge and lower deck, while Grain Loader 4 was completely destroyed, collapsing into the water. Although Grain Loader 3 sustained minor damage, fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the crew or terminal personnel. As a result of the collision, the grain terminal suspended all operations, leaving the timeline for resuming activities uncertain. This terminal is crucial in handling grain, with the capability to load 1,500 tons of corn or soybeans into vessels. Following the incident, the 'Milagro' anchored offshore before moving to Barra de Santos for emergency repairs, expected to last three days. The vessel is scheduled to return to the terminal to load a sizeable 65,000 tons of soybeans after these quick fixes, with plans for permanent repairs to be carried out in China. Meanwhile, the Santos Port authorities initiated inquiries into the event to ascertain the details surrounding this maritime mishap. For more visual insights, Brazilian news outlets have shared photographic documentation of the incident.
