On August 8, 2021, an oil spill incident occurred during cargo operations involving the tanker 'Minerva Symphony' at the Novorossiysk CPC (Caspian Pipeline Consortium) terminal. The spill, which happened approximately six kilometers off the coast of Novorossiysk, raised significant environmental concerns. Following the incident, authorities worked quickly to localize the affected area. Investigations were initiated by the Novorossiysk Transport Prosecutor's Office under the auspices of the Southern Transport Prosecutor's Office to determine compliance with environmental and maritime safety regulations. On August 11, Russian prosecutors escalated their response by opening a criminal investigation into the incident, which unlike initial estimates, has been reported to have a far more extensive impact on the Black Sea coastline. The spill, which took place over the weekend at the Yuzhnaya Ozereyevka oil terminal, is known for its connection to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium's operations, transporting crude oil from Kazakhstan. Initial estimates suggested the spill covered a mere 200 square meters; however, satellite analysis conducted by scientists revealed a shocking extent of almost 80 square kilometers of pollution. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Russia stated that around 100 metric tonnes of oil have contaminated the marine environment, prompting the Prosecutor General's office to pursue charges related to environmental pollution and seek damages for the incident. Despite these alarming figures, Russia's state consumer safety agency, Roskomnadzor, assured the public that recent analyses of water samples along the Black Sea coast indicated that pollution levels remained within safe limits. Agency chief Svetlana Radionova noted the rapid response of safety systems that seemingly curtailed further spillage, though the exact volume of the leak was not disclosed. In light of these events, Deputy Prime Minister Viktoria Abramchenko convened with the director of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which operates the extensive 1,511-kilometre pipeline linking Kazakhstan with Russia's Black Sea coastline, to demand comprehensive details concerning the spill’s impact. An impressive fleet of 17 response vessels, including skimmers and oil storage tanks, was deployed to manage the situation effectively.
