Freighter 'Missouriborg' Faces Propulsion Failure Near Ushant
On February 22, 2020, the freighter 'Missouriborg' encountered a significant propulsion failure while navigating through the traffic separation scheme off the coast of Ushant. The incident occurred in the early afternoon, raising immediate concerns for maritime safety and environmental protection. As the disabled vessel drifted dangerously, the Maritime Prefect of the Atlantic issued a request to the ship's owner at 9:30 p.m. to ensure prompt action was taken to mitigate the risks presented by the 'Missouriborg'. At that time, the vessel was reported to be less than 17 nautical miles west of Ushant. When the ship failed to restore adequate propulsion by the deadline set by authorities, the French offshore tug 'Sapeur' (IMO: 9270397) was dispatched for assistance. The towing operation began at 11:45 p.m. On February 24, the 'Missouriborg' remained safely secured at its anchorage near Douarnenez Bay, positioned at 48° 12.42' N 004° 28.67' W. The vessel was transporting cargo from Setubal to Mäntyluoto, with an expected arrival date of February 28, but departed Douarnenez Bay on February 25 and ultimately reached Mäntyluoto at 9:30 a.m. on March 3.
