New Ultra Large Container Ship Collides with Cargo Vessel in East China Sea
On March 29, 2018, the 'Cosco Shipping Leo' (IMO: 9783502), a newly launched Ultra Large Container Ship (ULCS) undergoing sea trials with a crew of 150 onboard, encountered a collision with the 'Mercury Triumph'. The cargo ship was en route from Tobata to China, carrying a shipment of steel, when the incident occurred approximately 50 miles south of Seogwipo, situated in southern Jeju. Following the collision, the 'Mercury Triumph' sustained significant damage, including hull breaches from the bow to the stern, water ingress into the ballast tanks, rendering it disabled and adrift. The 'Cosco Shipping Leo' also incurred damage to its starboard bow, which included dented hull plating and the loss of an anchor. The ULCS had embarked on its trials just two days prior, having departed from Nantong on March 27.
