Cargo Ship 'Thruster' Towed to Safety in Messina Following Engine Failure

Jun 10, 2016 11:16

On June 8, 2016, the cargo ship 'Thruster' encountered significant engine troubles while navigating the Strait of Messina. The incident prompted an immediate response from the Vessel Traffic Service based in the port, which dispatched the tugboat 'Macistone' to assist the stricken vessel. At 11:15 p.m., the 'Thruster', carrying a load of aluminum bars and en route from Piombino to Derince, was successfully taken in tow with its crew of eight on board. The vessel was located in the north/south shipping lane near Ganzirri when the emergency occurred. Additionally, a pilot boat and a search and rescue (SAR) unit from the Navy were deployed to the scene. By 8 a.m. on June 9, the 'Thruster' was safely towed into the port of Messina, where it was set to undergo repairs and was subject to a Port State Control inspection.

Vessel Detained by MCA for Eight Days at Avonmouth Amid Serious Safety Violations

May 17, 2013 09:34

On March 27, 2013, a vessel was detained at the Avonmouth port, marking a significant incident in maritime safety enforcement. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) identified nine critical deficiencies linked to the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, indicating severe failures in the vessel's safety management system. Among the alarming issues noted were several concerning life-saving appliances. During an abandon ship drill, crew members struggled with securing ropes and covers, revealing inadequate training on the operation of essential safety equipment. Likewise, in a fire drill, the breathing apparatus was improperly rigged, raising serious concerns about the crew's capability to handle emergencies. Additionally, a lifebuoy light located on the portside was found to be non-operational. The inspection also uncovered multiple fire safety shortcomings, including malfunctioning fire dampers and improperly secured moveable aft hold bulkheads. Moreover, two INMARSAT transceivers failed to pass satisfactory tests, and serious deficiencies were noted with safety equipment such as a missing gangway net and a broken pilot ladder. The vessel's draught marks at the front were also unreadable. The crew faced issues with the sewage system as well, where temporary repairs indicated a lack of proper maintenance, and the sewage holding tank was vented directly into the engine room—compromising hygiene and safety. The records for voyage passage plans and crew rest schedules were substandard, and food storage areas were found in unsanitary conditions, with freezers requiring cleaning and defrosting. In an alarming maneuver, thawed food was re-frozen during cleaning operations, raising food safety concerns. A security-related defect was also noted. After eight days of intensive inspections and necessary rectifications, the vessel was ultimately released on April 5, 2013. This incident highlights the crucial need for rigorous adherence to maritime safety regulations and proper crew training to prevent dangerous situations and ensure the welfare of all aboard.

Maritime Incident: 'Thruster' Detained in Avonmouth for Multiple Safety Violations

Apr 17, 2013 08:59

On March 27, 2013, the vessel 'Thruster' faced detention in Avonmouth due to multiple serious deficiencies identified during inspections. A total of nine issues were marked under the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, revealing significant shortcomings in the vessel's operational readiness and safety protocols. Among the alarming findings were life-saving appliance deficiencies; during an abandon ship drill, issues arose with securing ropes and covers, highlighting inadequate training on the operation of essential lifesaving equipment. The fire drill also raised concerns as the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (CABA) was incorrectly rigged, indicating a lack of preparedness for emergencies.
