Controversy Surrounds Judicial Release of Suspected Cocaine Traffickers in Fort-de-France
The legal proceedings surrounding the release of two individuals implicated in a significant cocaine trafficking case in Fort-de-France are drawing intense scrutiny. The General Prosecutor's Office of Fort-de-France has announced plans to appeal to the Court of Cassation regarding a recent ruling by the Fort-de-France Court of Appeal that permitted the release of two Guyanese nationals. These men were indicted on March 24 by the Interregional Specialized Jurisdiction (JIRS) for their alleged involvement in orchestrating cocaine trafficking operations. The case came to light following the arrest of the suspects on March 17, during which authorities discovered magnetic cases allegedly affixed to the hull of the vessel 'MN Toucan' for drug smuggling. After being held in police custody for 72 hours, their detention was controversially extended without a judge's oversight, a decision reportedly influenced by the operational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the justice system. In early April, the defense team for the two suspected traffickers successfully appealed for their release under judicial supervision, citing claims of arbitrary detention. However, it wasn't until early May that this appeal was officially registered with the court's registry. As the legal saga unfolds, a hearing regarding the General Prosecutor's Office's appeal is not anticipated before mid-July, leaving many questions regarding the fate of the accused and the integrity of the judicial process.
Condor Ferries Charters MN Toucan to Replace Commodore Clipper After Incident
Condor Ferries is taking decisive action to support its freight clients and passengers in light of an unfortunate incident that occurred on July 14, when the COMMODORE CLIPPER came into contact with the sea floor while navigating the Little Russel on its way to Guernsey. In response, the company has secured a charter for the freighter MN TOUCAN to maintain essential supply links while the Commodore Clipper undergoes repairs in dry dock until August 26. Starting operations imminently, the MN Toucan will operate along the vital route connecting Portsmouth and Guernsey. During this period, the Commodore Goodwill will concentrate on servicing Jersey, with occasional stops in Guernsey as needed. The MN Toucan, a roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) cargo vessel, is set to commence its duties by picking up empty trailers in Guernsey on Tuesday morning, July 29, before returning to Portsmouth that same evening to load full trailers bound for the Island. To keep freight customers informed about the situation, Condor Ferries has launched a dedicated Twitter account (@clipperupdate), where updates on the movements of the MN Toucan, the freight-only vessel Commodore Goodwill, and ongoing repair works on the Commodore Clipper will be posted regularly.
MN Toucan Causes Ferry Drift Incident on Weser River
In a notable incident on August 6, 2011, at 2:45 a.m., the vessel MN Toucan, which was navigating upstream on the Weser River after departing from Le Havre, inadvertently caused disruption at the passenger and vehicle ferry berth of Lemwerder 2 (IMO: 1179968). The MN Toucan's movement generated significant suction and wave action, leading to the failure of all four mooring lines securing the unmanned ferry. As a result, the Lemwerder 2 began drifting towards Vegesack Harbour. Upon reaching the harbour, the unmanned ferry collided with a moored fishing vessel, inflicting damage to its mast. The Lemwerder 2 also sustained injuries during the incident, necessitating assistance from another ferry to return it safely to shore. Meanwhile, at 3:30 a.m., the MN Toucan successfully docked at warehouse 24 in Bremen, prompting immediate investigations by the Bremen water police. They are currently looking into the actions of the MN Toucan's captain, who is suspected of operating the ship at excessive speed.
