Sister Vessels of MOL Comfort Reenter Service After Hull Reinforcement
In a significant development for maritime operations, three sister vessels of the ill-fated MOL Comfort have successfully returned to active duty following extensive hull reinforcements. On August 10, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) announced that the MOL Celebration, MOL Courage, and MOL Creation are now back in service, ready to sail the Asia – Europe trade routes. These three vessels represent part of a fleet of six sisterships that were built five years ago at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The return comes after the tragic incident on June 17, when the MOL Comfort split in half in the Indian Ocean, highlighting the importance of hull integrity in modern maritime vessels.
MOL Fleet Enhancement Initiative Underway Following Incident
As part of a strategic enhancement initiative, the 'MOL Courage' has been undergoing significant strengthening work at the Benoi Shipyard in Singapore since July 3. This measure comes in response to the recent 'MOL Comfort' incident, aimed at bolstering the operational safety and performance of the MOL fleet. The 'MOL Courage' is scheduled to return to Mitsui OSK Lines' LP1 service from Singapore on August 13. Meanwhile, the 'MOL Celebration,' which is also undergoing modifications, is anticipated to rejoin the LP1 service from Vung Tau on August 23. Additionally, the sister vessels 'MOL Creation,' 'MOL Charisma,' and 'MOL Competence,' all launched between 2007 and 2008, as well as the 'MOL Commitment,' which was delivered in 2013, are slated for similar enhancements. The 'MOL Competence' is expected to head to dry dock later this week, while the 'MOL Commitment' awaits available yard capacity for its planned upgrade.
MOL COURAGE and Sibling Vessels Set for Dry-Dock After MOL COMFORT Incident
In the wake of the unfortunate tragedy involving MOL COMFORT, the G6 Alliance has put forth a contingency strategy as the sister ships, including MOL COURAGE, prepare for a special dry-docking procedure. This decisive action comes in response to the loss of the MOL COMFORT, which has raised safety and operational concerns within the fleet. As the maritime industry watches closely, the measures being taken reflect the G6's commitment to maintaining service reliability.
