MOL Celebration, MOL Courage, and MOL Creation Resume Operations After Hull Reinforcement
Following extensive hull reinforcement, three sisterships of the ill-fated MOL Comfort have successfully resumed operations. Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) announced that the MOL Celebration, MOL Courage, and MOL Creation re-entered service on the Asia-Europe trade route on August 10. These vessels are among six sisterships of the MOL Comfort, which tragically split in half on June 17 while navigating the Indian Ocean. Constructed at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the MOL Comfort and its sister vessels have undergone rigorous assessments to ensure safety and reliability for their ongoing voyages.
MOL, MHI, and Class NK Initiate Inspections on MOL Comfort's Six Sister Vessels
In a proactive measure following the tragic incident involving the MOL Comfort, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has commenced inspections of her six sister vessels. The MOL Comfort, a five-year-old container ship, infamously split in two on June 17 in the Indian Ocean, prompting swift action from the shipping community. MOL has partnered with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and ClassNK to investigate the cause of this distressing event. Although the specific reasons behind the MOL Comfort's unfortunate fate are yet to be determined, MOL has stated, 'We are arranging inspections of all six sister vessels as quickly as possible.' The sisterships, which include the MOL Creation, MOL Charisma, MOL Celebration, MOL Courage, MOL Competence, and MOL Commitment, are undergoing evaluations to ensure their operational integrity. Moreover, one of the vessels is being inspected while actively navigating, and MOL is also implementing measures to mitigate hull stresses across these six ships. 'We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause and developing comprehensive strategies to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future,' MOL assured. With salvage vessels reaching the wreck site, the focus now shifts to ensuring the safety and reliability of the remaining fleet.
