In the early hours of June 21, 2021, at approximately 2:30 a.m., a critical distress signal was received by the British Coast Guard from the sailing vessel 'Hydra 4,' which was found to be taking on water and in danger of sinking 22 nautical miles northeast of Barfleur. The cargo vessel 'Hardy,' which was making its way from Bayonne to Hamburg with an expected arrival on June 28, responded to the urgency of the situation after intercepting the distress call. In coordination with the CROSS Jobourg, which had broadcast a MAYDAY RELAY message, several search and rescue resources were dispatched to the scene. Due to adverse sea conditions, the freighter's lifeboat could not be deployed; however, the 'Hardy' successfully secured the 'Hydra 4' alongside its starboard side. The ferry 'Mont Saint Michel' was strategically positioned downwind of the stricken sailboat to assist. The three crew members aboard 'Hydra 4' were subsequently transferred to the freighter. A Caïman Marine helicopter arrived, hoisting the stranded sailors and transporting them safely to the military schools in Querqueville, where they were greeted by a rescue team (SECMAR) and Cherbourg firefighters. Fortunately, none required hospitalization following the incident. Upon the arrival of the lifeboat 'Amiral de Tourville,' the crew noted that dewatering procedures couldn't be initiated before towing the vessel. They also observed a minor iridescence on the water's surface around the sinking boat, which dissipated due to the prevailing sea conditions.
