Crew Member Medically Evacuated from Bulk Carrier 'Slavyanka' in Flushing
On the afternoon of July 3, 2017, swift action was taken by the KNRM lifeboat stationed in Breskens to medevac a crew member from the bulk carrier 'Slavyanka.' The vessel was anchored in the Wester Scheldt, en route to Teesport, when the crew member began experiencing severe chest pain. The situation prompted the Dutch Coast Guard to reach out to the Radio Medical Service for assistance. Following the assessment by the attending physician, it was determined that immediate evacuation to a hospital was necessary. The Dutch Coast Guard quickly dispatched the Breskens lifeboat to the scene. An ambulance was also prepped to meet the lifeboat at Poseidon Pier in Flushing. The lifeboat 'Zeemanshoop' first picked up ambulance personnel before heading towards the bulk carrier. Two crew members along with two ambulance staff boarded 'Slavyanka' to perform a medical evaluation. Given the urgency of the situation, it was concluded that the ailing sailor required prompt hospital care. Luckily, he was able to walk, and with great care, he was assisted aboard the lifeboat. The 'Zeemanshoop' quickly made its way to the outer port of Flushing, where the sailor was transferred to the awaiting ambulance for transport to Goes hospital. This incident highlights the crucial role of maritime rescue operations in ensuring the safety and health of seafarers at sea. For more details and visuals, you can visit the Dutch report at KNRM.
