In a tragic incident at Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) in Male on April 7, 2014, the downpouring of a shipping container from the vessel 'Moning Viship' led to the deaths of two MPL workers and left another injured. The men were preparing for the loading of goods from Cochin, where the ship had arrived on April 6, when the disaster struck. Reports indicate that a wire from the vessel's container crane snapped, causing the heavy container to crash perilously. One worker was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where medical staff treated him for multiple fractures. Fortunately, the third individual involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was stabilized at IGMH. The crane operator, who had previously raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the container cranes, fainted during the incident and was subsequently transported to ADK Hospital for medical attention. This devastating occurrence underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures within the port operations.
