On March 23, 2011, the maritime authorities in Brake, Germany, launched an investigation into the vessel 'Sabine' (IMO: 7101891) over alleged environmental violations. During a targeted inspection, water police officers discovered a significant quantity of an environmentally hazardous oil-water mixture stored in the cofferdam. A review of the ship's oil record book raised red flags; it indicated that substantial amounts of oil-water mixture, which should have been transferred from the bilge to a designated tank, had instead leaked into the cofferdam due to a defect in the system.
