Investigation Underway After Tanker Collides with Fishing Vessel, Causing Fatality

Oct 08, 2025 10:20

In a tragic maritime incident on October 4 at 10:30 p.m., the tanker 'Favor' collided with the Vietnamese fishing vessel 'BD 83019-TS' approximately 30 kilometers offshore from the Ca Na estuary, located at coordinates 11Β°03'49" N 108Β°56'57" E. The visibility during the incident was reported to be poor. The fishing vessel, measuring 22.6 meters in length, sank shortly after the collision at 10:48 p.m. At the time of the accident, the vessel was captained by Mr. Nguyen Tran Ut, a 47-year-old resident of An Quang Tay Village in De Gi Commune. The 'BD 83019-TS' had set sail from the Ca Na Border Inspection Post at 1:50 p.m. on the same day. Following the collision, the 'Favor' continued its journey without providing any assistance or reporting the incident. Fortunately, ten of the eleven crew members aboard the fishing vessel were rescued by another nearby fishing vessel, the 'BV 95869-TS', which was under the command of Captain Nguyen Van Tao. This rescue occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m. Sadly, Captain Nguyen Tran Ut was trapped in his cabin when the vessel sank, and despite extensive search efforts involving six boats, his recovery was unsuccessful at that time. The rescued crew members were brought to Ca Na port in Khanh Hoa on October 5 for health assessments. In subsequent recovery operations, divers located the sunken 'BD 83019-TS' at a depth of 60 meters. Their efforts culminated in recovering Captain Ut’s body on October 6 at 11 a.m. Authorities have since initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Remarkably, the tanker 'Favor', which had set off from Phu My on the same date, reached its destination in Kaoshiung on October 8.
