Grounding Incident In Mobile Bay Involves Container Ship 'Ruby Tower'
On January 26, 2026, the container ship 'Ruby Tower' encountered a significant operational challenge shortly after leaving APM Terminals in Mobile. The vessel, which set sail at 11 a.m., experienced a critical loss of steering power at 1 p.m., leading to an unfortunate grounding in Mobile Bay, just north of Galliard Island. The incident prompted the closure of the Mobile Shipping Channel until the vessel could be safely removed. At the time of the incident, two experienced pilots were navigating the 'Ruby Tower'. Swift action was taken as three tugboats were dispatched to assist in refloating the stranded ship. Meanwhile, the U.S. Coast Guard was actively on-site, working in conjunction with officials from the Port Authority, USACE, and AEMA to manage the situation efficiently. Thankfully, by around 4 p.m., the 'Ruby Tower' was successfully refloated and began its return to APM Terminals, arriving at approximately 3:30 a.m. UTC on January 27, under its own power with tugboat support. Following the incident, the Coast Guard has scheduled an inspection of the vessel.
