MSC Altair Drifts Ashore After Breaking Free from Prince Rupert Terminal

Nov 25, 2021 10:03

On November 24, 2021, at approximately 2 p.m., the container ship MSC Altair encountered a significant mishap at the Fairview Container Terminal in Prince Rupert. After arriving from Phu My on November 23, the vessel broke free from its moorings due to powerful winds, subsequently drifting aground near Digby Island. Quick response teams, including tugs from the Port Authority and the Canadian Coast Guard's patrol vessel, McIntyre Bay, intervened promptly. With the coordinated efforts of multiple tugs, the MSC Altair was successfully refloated and relocated to the outer anchorage in Chatham Sound. The ship, now secured with its own power, has been waiting for the rough weather to ease. As of November 25, it remained anchored at position 54° 10.14' N 130° 36.60' W, with the tug Tsimshian Warrior (IMO: 9849710) providing assistance. The region, including Prince Rupert and the entirety of the North Coast along with Haida Gwaii, was under wind warnings from Environment Canada, with forecasts predicting southerly winds reaching up to 90 km/h and gusts potentially hitting 110 km/h.
