Collision at Sea: MSC Asli and Cornelia Johannes Incident

On the morning of February 9, 2011, at approximately 6:30 a.m., a maritime incident occurred 45 kilometers off the coast of Vlieland in the North Sea when the container ship MSC Asli, IMO 9162631, collided with the Dutch fishing vessel Cornelia Johannes, registration VD-77. The Cornelia Johannes, a 25-meter fishing vessel built in 1964 with a gross tonnage of 84, sustained damage to its bow and reportedly lost one fishing net. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from either vessel. Following the collision, MSC Asli, which was en route to Gothenburg after departing from Antwerp, sustained hull damage primarily at the stern but continued its voyage without returning to port. Meanwhile, the Cornelia Johannes navigated towards Den Oever for a detailed investigation into the damage incurred during the incident. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Den Helder dispatched the coast guard vessel Ievoli Black to escort the Cornelia Johannes safely to Den Oever.
