Historic Arrival of South America’s Largest Container Ship
Making maritime history, the MSC Asya has become the largest container vessel to ever dock in the bustling ports of South America. The Panama-flagged ship began her journey in Valparaíso and is now en route to San Vicente, following successful stops at Peru’s El Callao and Iquique in northern Chile. This impressive vessel, managed by the renowned Italian company Mediterranean Shipping Company, boasts a gross tonnage of 107,849. Alan Thiznau, head of Mediterranean, highlighted the ship's impressive specifications, noting that the MSC Asya was manufactured in 2008 at the renowned Samsung shipyards in South Korea. Measuring an astounding 337 meters in length, with a beam of 45.6 meters and a depth of 22.81 meters, this Post-Panamax giant has a draft of 15.53 meters. With an impressive capacity for 9,200 TEU, the MSC Asya carries 18 rows of containers across her beam. Currently, around 70% of the cargo she carries consists of auto spares, fine wine, and fresh fruits, underscoring the wide-ranging impact of this colossal vessel on trade in the region.
