Brisbane Port Storm Incident: Investigations Underway After Ships Break Loose
On November 24, 2025, the Port of Brisbane faced severe disruptions as four vessels were dislodged from their docking positions during a violent storm characterized by winds reaching 70 knots. In response to this incident, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has initiated an investigation expected to conclude in the second quarter of 2026. The ATSB's assessment will involve a thorough examination of winches, mooring lines, anchor systems, and the collection of evidence including documented data from the ships, vessel traffic services, and pilotage providers. Investigators will also conduct interviews with the masters, pilots, and other stakeholders involved in this maritime occurrence. The affected vessels included the container ship 'Volans' (IMO: 9430777), chartered to COSCO for the JKN service linking Asia and New Zealand via Brisbane; the 'Wide India' (IMO: 9698252), currently serving Hapag-Lloyd's SEA service between Southeast Asia and Australia; the 'MSC Barbara', operating under MSC's Panda service from China; and the vehicle carrier 'Viking Passama' (IMO: 9491874). Fortunately, no significant damage to the vessels or port infrastructure was reported, and there were no injuries or environmental pollution. At approximately 3 PM local time, as the 'Viking Passama' was attempting to berth, powerful gusts forced the ship away from the wharf, resulting in four of its mooring lines parting and drifting into the shipping channel. Two tugs were deployed to assist in repositioning the vessel once the winds eased. Not long after, the 'MSC Barbara' became dislodged as its mooring lines failed, causing it to drift across the channel until it grounded on a muddy bottom in Morton Bay, located east of Mud Island. Pilots promptly boarded the vessel, which was successfully refloated and escorted to an anchorage where divers conducted necessary hull inspections. Simultaneously, the 'Wide India' broke free when its mooring lines snapped, yet its master managed to keep the vessel steady in the channel until pilots took over and guided it to safety. Additionally, the 'Volans' partially lost its position when its aft mooring lines gave way, but remaining lines kept it close to the dock until it could be secured. By the evening of the incident, all ships had been anchored and the Port of Brisbane was reopened for shipping traffic. As of November 26, the 'MSC Barbara' remained at anchor in Brisbane, while the 'Volans' departed the port on November 24, heading to Auckland with an estimated arrival date of November 26. The 'Viking Passama' set sail again on November 25, heading for Port Kembla, expected to arrive by November 29, and the 'Wide India' left Brisbane on November 25, with its next destination being Tanjung Pelapas, estimated to arrive by December 8.
