On September 21, 2011, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully performed a medical evacuation of a crewmember from the container ship MSC Beijing, situated around 69 miles north of Oahu. The captain of the ship alerted the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu about a 38-year-old male who was suffering from intense stomach pain. At the time of the emergency, the MSC Beijing was located approximately 828 miles from Oahu. Reacting swiftly to the medical urgency, the Coast Guard's flight surgeon advised that the vessel alter its course towards Oahu for an aerial evacuation of the patient. To coordinate this critical mission, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules aircraft were dispatched from Air Station Barbers Point. The helicopter crew executed a safe hoist of the patient utilizing a stokes litter, while the Hercules provided essential communication support throughout the operation. Following the successful retrieval, the Dolphin returned to Air Station Barbers Point, where the patient was promptly handed over to emergency medical services, who then transported him to Queen’s Medical Center for advanced care.
