Tragic Incident at Sea: Crew Member Lost Overboard and Another Injured on Cape Mayor

On December 31, 2015, the cargo ship "Cape Mayor" sent out a distress signal at 5:28 PM while sailing approximately 40 miles north of Ouessant in the treacherous waters of the English Channel. The vessel reported that one crew member had sustained injuries and another had tragically gone overboard amid inclement weather conditions. Following an urgent consultation with the Maritime Medical Consultation Centre (MMCC) in Toulouse and the Maritime Medical Coordination office in Finistère, it was decided to execute a medevac operation for the injured sailor. At around 8:50 PM, a helicopter dispatched from the Lanvéoc Naval base in Lorient successfully airlifted the injured 42-year-old Russian sailor. The helicopter arrived at the Cavale Blanche hospital in Brest by 10 PM, ensuring prompt medical attention. Sadly, the lost crew member was located at 8:25 PM and retrieved by helicopter but was pronounced dead upon arrival onboard at 9:35 PM. At the time of the incident, the "Cape Mayor" was navigating from Rotterdam to Tanger.
