A significant disaster was averted at the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) located in the Port of Colombo on August 11, 2024, thanks to the prompt actions of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). The incident occurred aboard the 'MSC Capetown III' while the vessel was engaged in the process of discharging 995 boxes and loading 880. The fire ignited in the 41/43 hatch area, affecting around 100 containers beneath the deck and approximately 60 on the deck itself. As the situation escalated into an explosion, the SLPA’s firefighting team, under the leadership of the Harbour Master and in conjunction with other port services, acted swiftly to bring the fire under control. Interestingly, prior to the incident, there were no indications of fire while the ship was docked. The SLPA firefighters quickly pinpointed the smoke's origin, which ultimately led to the explosion. They successfully extinguished the flames and safely handled the removal of affected cargo. In addition to the cargo being worked on, the vessel was also transporting 596 out-port containers. The SLPA has reiterated its dedication to ensuring the safety and security of its operations and continues to maintain vigilance over the situation.
