In a legal dispute arising from a fire incident, MSC has initiated a lawsuit against the US vehicle logistics firm CargoLoop, targeting $273,000 in damages. This lawsuit stems from an incident aboard the 'MSC Carlotta' that occurred on September 2, 2023, while journeying from California to Lithuania. During the voyage, two CargoLoop containers containing used and previously damaged electric vehicles ignited. Notably, the cargo documentation labeled it as hazardous material, a classification MSC acknowledged prior to acceptance. The vehicles in question were stored within 40-foot containers, supported by wooden structures for stacking. The blaze ignited while the vessel was off the coast of Baja California, beginning in one container before spreading to another, also loaded with electric vehicles. Despite the crew's successful efforts to contain the fire, damage extended to nearby containers due to the flames and the water utilized in firefighting efforts, prompting the ship to alter its course to a Mexican port for thorough unloading and inspection. MSC's investigation suggests that the fire likely originated in proximity to a 2018 Tesla Model S, positioned atop a 2012 Ford Focus. The shipping giant suspects that the wooden support structure failed during transit, leading to the Tesla's descent onto the Ford, which might have compromised its battery and ignited the fire. Moreover, the investigation pointed out similar structural issues with another CargoLoop container on the same journey. MSC also considered alternative scenarios, including potential damage to batteries during forklift handling, or lapses in safety practices such as failing to disconnect vehicle batteries prior to transportation.

A significant drug seizure occurred at the Callao port when authorities discovered 1,851 packages of cocaine weighing a total of 2,202 kilograms concealed within containers aboard the MSC Carlotta. The vessel, which docked in Callao on April 23, 2019, had previously called at Panama before heading towards Antwerp, suspected to be the final destination for the illicit cargo. Despite the discovery, no crew members were detained, as investigations continued. The MSC Carlotta remained at port until April 25, departing at 11:20 a.m.
