Tragic Incident Claims Life of Young Crew Member on MSC Damla

Mar 30, 2017 10:58

A heartbreaking accident unfolded on March 29, 2017, as a 19-year-old crew member aboard the MSC Damla tragically fell to his death while the vessel was docked at the newly established DP World terminal in the Deurganck dock in Doel. The young sailor met his fate following an alarm indicating the presence of water and oil in the cargo hold. In an effort to address the alarm, he descended a narrow, steep metal staircase leading to the hold, which extends a daunting sixteen meters downwards. Witnesses believe his fall might have been exacerbated by wet conditions, attributed to a recent thunderstorm in the Waasland port area. Unfortunately, he appears to have lost his footing, struck his head, and succumbed to the fall. The staircase was seldom utilized, typically reserved only for emergencies like the one that prompted this tragic turn of events. The victim had recently joined the vessel's crew just days prior to the accident. The MSC Damla departed from Antwerp at 7:15 a.m. on March 30, continuing its journey towards Le Havre, with an estimated time of arrival set for March 31.

Surfer Rescued After Night Adrift at Sea by MSC Damla Off Wollongong

Jan 13, 2017 10:29

In a remarkable rescue, a surfer found himself safe and sound after spending a harrowing night at sea, having been swept six kilometers offshore from Bulli. The incident unfolded when a Japanese tourist, aged 37, ventured into the waters but soon found himself separated from the shore, clinging to his surfboard for survival. The drama reached a conclusion on Friday morning when the crew of the Panama-flagged cargo ship MSC Damla spotted him drifting and quickly came to his aid. Just after 9 AM on Friday, roughly 16 hours after initiating his surfing session at Bulli Beach, the man was guided aboard the MSC Damla, a 300-meter long container vessel. Port Kembla Water Police Sergeant Sean Netting praised the crew's swift response, detailing how they lowered a gangway allowing the surfer to paddle over and be lifted from the water. "We couldn't believe it. He's out there on a surfboard, adrift, at nighttime. The risk would be hypothermia from exposure to the elements and drowning should he have become separated from the board," Netting remarked. Fortunately, the surfer remained calm throughout his ordeal and was eventually brought back to safety.
