MSC Daniela Undergoes Repairs After Fire Incident in Shanghai
The container ship MSC Daniela is anticipated to resume operations by mid-June following extensive repairs necessitated by a fire that erupted on April 4 in one of the aft section containers. This fire rapidly escalated, with some boxes continuing to smolder for over two weeks. The vessel arrived at Changxing Yard in Shanghai on May 22 after an eight-day journey from Sri Lanka, where it was promptly drydocked for necessary repairs.
Concerns Over Misdeclared Hazardous Cargo Following Fire on MSC Daniela
Swiss container shipping giant MSC has raised alarms regarding the possibility that misdeclared hazardous materials may have sparked the devastating fire aboard the 'MSC Daniela', which occurred off the coast of Sri Lanka on April 3. A report from the Sri Lankan Navy indicated that two fast attack crafts were promptly dispatched to assist the stricken vessel; however, initial firefighting efforts failed due to the flames’ ferocity. In addition, two tugs from the Sri Lankan Port Authority joined the rescue operation, which ultimately led to the crew's evacuation. MSC is conducting a thorough investigation to uncover the specifics of the incident. On April 27, the last batch of containers was unloaded at Jaya Container Terminal in Colombo, with reports noting that some containers continued to smolder on deck. Inspectors are currently scrutinizing the damaged containers and their contents to identify the cause of the blaze. Local Sri Lankan authorities have expressed concern that airborne chemicals could be drifting ashore, posing a risk to the surrounding communities.
