Three Men Sentenced for Multi-Million Dollar Theft from Reserve Bank of Fiji
On Monday, three individuals were sentenced for their involvement in the theft of FJD 1 million (approximately S$650,000) belonging to the Reserve Bank of Fiji. The scheme took place aboard the mv Pacific Voyager, which was docked at Jurong Port on August 19, 2010. Abdul Quadir Katu Miah, a 39-year-old timekeeper and container checker, received a five-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to five charges out of nine. Alongside him, Azhar Abdul Shukor, 37, a lashing foreman, conspired with Miah and Musa Mohmad, 41, also a lashing foreman, during the theft. Azhar was sentenced to four years and nine months after pleading guilty to four out of six charges, while Musa was handed a four-year prison term for his plea on two of four charges. During the court proceedings, it was revealed that a container filled with 127 boxes of new FJD 20 denomination notes—with a staggering total of FJD 202 million—was securely loaded onto the Pacific Voyager and sealed before the theft occurred.
