Severe Winds Dislodge Container Ship at Tauranga Port
On the night of April 13, 2018, Tauranga's Sulphur Point container terminal experienced powerful winds exceeding 110km/h, resulting in significant disruption. The strong gusts caused the mooring lines of the fully loaded container vessel 'Carsten Maersk' to snap while docked at the wharf. The vessel's aft was pushed into the neighboring sitting basin, prompting immediate action from three Port of Tauranga tugs. These tugs successfully maneuvered the 'Carsten Maersk' back to its original position alongside the wharf, ensuring the vessel's stability while operations staff re-secured the mooring lines. Fortunately, there was no reported damage to either the wharves or the ship. In line with maritime safety protocols, the Tauranga Harbourmaster and Maritime New Zealand were notified of the incident. The ship underwent precautionary checks before being cleared to set sail. Consequently, cargo operations at the Tauranga Container Terminal were temporarily halted due to the adverse weather conditions. Initially scheduled for departure at 10 a.m. for Kaohsiung, the 'Carsten Maersk' is now projected to leave at 6 p.m.
MSC DENISSE X Makes History as First Japanese Departure Post-Fukushima
The MSC DENISSE X (IMO 9219795) recently marked a significant milestone by being the first vessel to depart Japan following the Fukushima nuclear disaster. According to Euronews, this historic ship made its way to Europe's largest port, Rotterdam. Prior to its arrival, the vessel conducted preliminary radioactivity scans upon its first docking at Felixstowe, UK. Upon reaching Rotterdam, port authorities took precautionary measures by inspecting all containers before unloading commenced. While officials indicated minimal risk of contamination due to rain, Richard van Buuren, head of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority's crisis team, confirmed, "The ship has undergone inspections in the UK, but these were limited to deck assessments, and not every container is checked regularly. Therefore, all containers being unloaded today will go through a thorough check by our teams, assessing both external and internal elements." The rigorous inspection process underscores the ongoing commitment to safety in the wake of environmental concerns.
