Ongoing Recovery Efforts for Lost Cargo from MSC Eloane

Jan 15, 2018 11:24

Efforts to recover cargo lost by the MSC Eloane continue along the picturesque beaches of Costa da Morte, located 40 miles off the Galician coast. Following the incident where 30-45 containers were lost, volunteers gathered on January 14 to help clean the O Rostro beach in Fisterra. This initiative was prompted by debris that washed ashore, including packages of wood chips and tobacco on the nearby Muxiana beach in Nemiña. On the same day, the SAR Gavia, supported by the patrol vessel Salvamar Altair, was actively involved in the recovery operations in the Corme and Laxe estuary. During the afternoon, crews successfully removed two sizable metal plates, remnants of the containers, using the crane from the SAR Gavia, which were then transported to the Cormelan pier in Gavia. Additionally, efforts to retrieve the remains of one container were underway in O Rostro, utilizing a tractor from the Concello to assist in its removal. After fulfilling its recovery obligations, the MSC Eloane departed from the port of Cadiz on January 17 at 3:15 p.m. Its next destination was Tankger, where it arrived on January 19 at 2:25 a.m. The vessel is scheduled to proceed to Valencia on the same day, with an estimated time of arrival set for January 20.

Cargo Containers Lost at Sea: MSC Eloane Incident

Jan 07, 2018 17:44

On January 5, 2018, the MSC Eloane reported the loss of between 30 and 45 containers approximately 40 nautical miles off the Galician coast, near Finisterre. This incident occurred around 10 p.m. while the vessel was navigating through turbulent waters, with wave heights reaching up to seven meters. The MSC Eloane was on its route from Rotterdam and Tanger at the time. Following the report of the incident, Salvamento Marítimo in Finisterre promptly informed nearby shipping traffic to exercise caution in the area, where it was believed that some of the lost containers could sink due to their own weight. The maritime rescue center decided to hold off on launching a search operation until January 7, in hopes that weather conditions might improve. After the incident, the MSC Eloane, which departed from Rotterdam on January 2, dropped anchor at Tanger on January 7 at 4:20 a.m. before making its way to the port of Cadiz, where it arrived on January 9 at 9 a.m. Fortunately, none of the lost cargo contained any hazardous materials.
