MSC Fabienne Towed to Safety: Operation Update from February 2020
On February 20, 2020, the container ship 'MSC Fabienne' alerted CROSS Corsen about a propulsion issue while navigating the traffic separation scheme near Ouessant. The vessel was transporting 1,178 containers from Antwerp to Gebze at the time. Responding swiftly, the Maritime Prefect of the Atlantic deployed the emergency tug 'Abeille Bourbon' to monitor the situation and prevent any potential hazards. The following day, on February 21, the Prefect instructed the shipowner to take immediate action to mitigate the risks posed by 'MSC Fabienne' to maritime safety and the environment. At that moment, the container ship was situated less than 10 nautical miles from the shallow waters north of Sept-Îles. While awaiting the delivery of spare parts for repairs, the owner of 'MSC Fabienne' arranged for the 'Abeille Bourbon' to tow the ship under a private contract. By 3:35 p.m., a towing connection was successfully established, and the convoy was scheduled to reach Brest by the evening of February 22.
