MSC Gianna III Faces Engine Failure in Çanakkale Strait

On January 3, 2026, the container vessel 'MSC Gianna III' experienced a significant engine failure while navigating the Çanakkale Strait near Kumkale. The ship was on a journey from Gioia Tauro (Palmi) to Tekirdağ when the incident occurred. Two rescue tugs, 'Kurtarma 17' (IMO 9942990) and 'Kurtarma 18' (IMO 9974890), were promptly dispatched to assist. Under the skilled coordination of the Çanakkale Ship Traffic Services Center and aided by a strait pilot, the MSC Gianna III was successfully towed to the Karanlık Liman Anchorage, positioned at 40° 54' N and 027° 38' E. On October 4, 2024, a significant maritime rescue unfolded as the Greek Coast Guard alerted the Port Authorities of Chania and Rethymno about a troubled migrant boat situated 32 nautical miles southeast of Gavdos. Responding swiftly, the container ship 'MSC Gianna III' came to the aid of the 35 individuals stranded at sea. After their rescue, the migrants were carefully transferred to a lifeboat and subsequently brought to Gavdos. Following that, they were escorted via a passenger ferry to Chora Sfakion, where arrangements for temporary shelter were made in Rethymno. The Port Authority of Rethymno has initiated a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding this event.
