Roro Ferry 'Napoles' Collides with 'Carolina Star' Near Tangier-Med

Jul 31, 2019 20:58

In the early hours of July 31, 2019, a noteworthy maritime incident occurred approximately two miles off Tangier-Med when the roro ferry 'Napoles' (IMO: 9243423), operating the route between Algeciras and Tangier Med, collided with the container ship 'Carolina Star'. The collision, taking place around 3 a.m., resulted in significant damage to the port side foreship of the 'Carolina Star' and the starboard side stern of the 'Napoles', which was en route from Algeciras at the time. Despite sustaining damage, the 'Napoles' successfully managed to dock at the port, allowing for the disembarkation of passengers and vehicles. However, the ferry was subsequently taken out of service for repairs. The Algeciras-Tangier Med route, fortunately, continued to function normally due to the availability of an additional ten ferries. Originally a reinforcement vessel that had been reassigned from its regular Huelva-Canaries route, the 'Napoles' was making multiple trips each day. Both vessels had departed from Algeciras, with the 'Carolina Star' having left at 12:40 p.m. on July 30 and arriving at Tangier-Med at 3:20 a.m. on July 31. After the incident, the 'Napoles' departed Tangier-Med on August 1 at 1:20 a.m., reaching the roro berth at Principale Felipe Quay in Algeciras at 2:35 a.m. Meanwhile, the 'Carolina Star' continued on its journey, leaving Tangier on August 1 at 3:30 p.m. and arriving at the Cernaval Group Shipyard in Campamento, Algeciras, by 7:50 p.m. for repairs to its damaged bow. Following repairs, the 'Carolina Star' departed the shipyard on August 14 at 12:10 p.m., subsequently sailing to Tangier-Med, where it arrived at 3:15 p.m. and set sail on August 15 at 1:45 a.m. bound for Lome, with an estimated arrival date of August 24.
