Containership Zim New York Runs Aground Near Saigon Newport
On June 6, 2018, at precisely 11:47 a.m., the containership Zim New York experienced grounding in the Vung Tau-Thi Vai Channel. The incident occurred after the vessel deviated from its designated route between buoys 11 and 12, at coordinates 10°25'53"N 107°00'35"E. The ship was en route to the Cai Mep International Container Terminal in Saigon Newport when it became stranded at the entrance of the New Cai Mep-Thi Vai Port (TCTT) in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province. Fortunately, the grounding did not disrupt other maritime traffic in the area. As the vessel ran aground during low tide, it was able to be refloated early on the morning of June 7, taking advantage of the rising tide, and was subsequently anchored at the outer Vung Tau anchorage at coordinates 0°15.81'N 107°3.54'E. Zim New York, which operates in the ZMP service, had arrived from Port Klang prior to the incident. Following the grounding, the Vung Tau Port Authority initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event.
