Heroic Rescue by Maersk Brooklyn: Tug Crew Saved Near Chennai

May 20, 2016 17:08

On May 19, 2016, the 'Maersk Brooklyn' played a crucial role in rescuing the crew of a distressed tug approximately 25 miles east of Chennai. The tug, which was traveling from Vishakapatnam to Mumbai, encountered a severe issue when it developed a crack in its steering compartment, leading to flooding in the cabin and creating a significant sinking threat. The situation prompted the Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to issue alerts to vessels within a 50-nautical mile radius. At that time, the 'Maersk Brooklyn,' en route from Kattupali to Colombo, was in close proximity to the troubled tug. The crew aboard the 'Maersk Brooklyn' promptly responded to a request to stand by until the Indian Coast Guard ship 'Varad' arrived on the scene. The 'Varad' departed at 10:20 a.m. and successfully executed a rescue operation, bringing all 11 tug crew members safely back to Chennai. This incident underscores the importance of maritime safety and the collaborative efforts of vessels in the region.

Tugboat Deployed to Assist Disabled Container Ship in English Channel

Jun 18, 2015 10:00

On June 16, 2014, the container ship 'Maersk Brooklyn' experienced mechanical issues while navigating the busy English Channel. The incident occurred in the afternoon, causing the vessel to drift amidst high maritime traffic. Recognizing that immediate repairs were not feasible, crew members secured the ship at a safe location in the waterway. At the time of the incident, the 'Maersk Brooklyn' was transporting 4,196 TEUs, including some containers carrying hazardous materials. Despite the ship's troubles, maritime traffic in the area remained unaffected. However, Dover Traffic issued a cautionary alert for vessels passing nearby. In the early hours of June 17, port authorities dispatched the tugboat 'Lomax' (IMO: 9657832) from Fawley to be on standby for potential assistance. Fortunately, the mechanical issues were assessed to be minor, allowing for repairs to be conducted on board without necessitating shore support. The 'Maersk Brooklyn', which had departed from Antwerp's SA Deurganck Terminal at approximately 2 a.m. the same day, was en route to Marsaxlokk with an expected arrival date of June 22.
