Claims of Drone Strike on MSC Ishyka III Emerge Amidst Regional Tensions
On April 4, 2026, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran announced that a drone strike targeted the 'MSC Ishyka III', a container ship engaged in regional trade routes connecting India, Africa, and the Arabian Gulf. At the time of the claimed attack, the vessel was docked in Manama, Bahrain. The ship found itself trapped in the Gulf after a U.S. military operation against Iran on February 28. The AIS (Automatic Identification System) signal for 'MSC Ishyka III' reappeared on the morning of April 2 at a different berth in Manama, but approximately 24 hours later, the signal vanished again and has not been restored since. There remains uncertainty surrounding the ship's activities in Bahrain, including whether it remained stationary or participated in intra-Gulf trade during this period. As of April 6, there has been no verification of the drone strike by any authorities or eyewitnesses. Historically, the IRGC has a track record of claiming successful attacks that either did not occur or were off-target. Additionally, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) did not include the reported strike on the 'MSC Ishyka III' in their official daily list of confirmed incidents in the Gulf region. The 'MSC Ishyka III' is owned by Pasithea Oceanway Ltd., a holding company with a registered address at an MSC office located in Cyprus. Despite IRGC assertions, there is no significant evidence linking MSC to Israeli interests, apart from its regular shipping services to Israeli ports. Notably, the vessel has had no operational ties to Israel and has not docked there in at least the last six months. In the past, Iranian-affiliated Houthi rebels have specifically targeted MSC vessels due to previously alleged but unsubstantiated connections to Israeli shipping activities.
