Cargo Ship 'MSC Istanbul' Refloated After Grounding in Suez Canal

Mar 06, 2023 11:26

On March 5, 2023, at approximately 3 p.m., the 'MSC Istanbul' experienced engine failure while navigating the Suez Canal in a northern direction. This incident occurred in Lake Timsah, Ismailiya, specifically at canal kilometer 85, where the vessel became lodged, obstructing the route for the northbound convoy. Fortunately, the ship was successfully refloated at around 8 p.m. thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple canal tugs, including 'Port Said', 'Musaed 1', 'Musaed 2', and 'Musaed 5'. The tug 'Baraka 1' was also on standby to assist with the refloating process. Despite the grounding, overall navigation in the Suez Canal remained uninterrupted, with other vessels from the north continuing their journeys without delay. MSC Welcomes New 15,908-TEU Vessel MSC Istanbul from STX Korea

Feb 02, 2015 18:07

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has officially taken delivery of the MSC Istanbul, the third in a series of six impressive 15,908-TEU container ships engineered at the STX Shipyard in South Korea. Out of this fleet, four vessels will be on long-term charter to Zodiac Maritime, while the remaining two are chartered from Eastern Pacific Shipping. This lineup of sister ships was initially commissioned by Zodiac Maritime in October 2010 as 13,000-TEU vessels. However, the specifications were upgraded just a year later to 16,000 TEU, marking a significant milestone as the first such ships constructed by STX, according to Alphaliner. In 2013, following a strategic fleet division initiated by the heirs of the late shipping magnate Sammy Ofer, two of these contracts shifted from Zodiac to Eastern Pacific, which now oversees the latest addition. The MSC Istanbul is set to integrate into the Maersk-MSC Far East-Europe AE-5/Albatros service, a part of the operations established by the 2M shipping alliance earlier this month. This follows the recent delivery of the MSC New York, which joined the fleet in October, enhancing MSC's capabilities in global shipping.
