World's Largest MAN B&W Engine Installed on MSC Jade Containership
In an exciting development for the maritime industry, MAN Diesel & Turbo has unveiled its largest and most powerful engine to date, now operational on the ultra-large containership MSC Jade. This vessel, which boasts a staggering capacity of 19,437 TEU, is equipped with the MAN B&W 11G95ME-C9.5 two-stroke engine, delivering an impressive 75,570 kW (equivalent to 103,000 horsepower). Additionally, the MSC Jade is fitted with four MAN L32/40 auxiliary engines, complemented by a single MAN turbocharger. The groundbreaking engine underwent rigorous testing in Korea back in October 2015, and was produced by Doosan Engine, a prominent manufacturer based in South Korea. The delivery of the MSC Jade, operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), took place in late May, marking a significant milestone in shipping technology. Notably, this engine is the first of six ordered by MSC, with a second ship in the series currently preparing for sea trials. Furthermore, two additional vessels are nearing completion at the rival Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard, with trials anticipated for June. This innovative propulsion system demonstrates the ongoing advancements in maritime engineering and sets a new benchmark for future container ships.
