On October 12, 2017, Coast Guard crews joined forces with the MSC Julie to assist two stranded boaters aboard their 48-foot recreational vessel, Moon Dance. The incident occurred approximately 30 miles south of Monterey, where the Moon Dance found itself adrift and out of fuel. Vessel Assist alerted Coast Guard Sector San Francisco at 2 a.m., indicating that the vessel was too far offshore for them to reach effectively. In response, Coast Guard watchstanders promptly dispatched a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from the Coast Guard Station in Monterey, alongside an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Air Station in San Francisco. An urgent marine information broadcast was also issued to alert nearby maritime traffic of the situation. The crew aboard the MSC Julie responded swiftly, locating the Moon Dance and maintaining a presence at the scene until the Coast Guard arrived. At around 4 a.m., the helicopter crew successfully reached the stranded boaters and provided them with a handheld radio to restore communications. Following a challenging four-hour transit due to eight-foot seas, the Station Monterey vessel reached the Moon Dance at 8:15 a.m. They towed the disabled boat toward the shore, ultimately transferring it to Vessel Assist after an extensive 12-hour ordeal at sea.
