Working Conditions Aboard the Msc-Kalina

On February 25, 2011, the container ship MSC Kalina, identifiable by IMO number 9399026, faced a perilous situation when it came under attack from pirates in the Indian Ocean, specifically south of Salalah and northeast of the Yemeni island of Socotra. In a dramatic turn of events, the MSC Kalina quickly ramped up its speed to 20 knots and executed evasive maneuvers to evade the threat. The pirates, who had launched their assault from a nearby mothership, ultimately abandoned their pursuit after 15 tense minutes. They approached the MSC Kalina in a small boat, unleashing a barrage of gunfire using RGP and assault rifles. Thankfully, all 23 members of the ship's diverse crew, hailing from countries such as Italy, Bangladesh, Croatia, Montenegro, Slovenia, and Indonesia, reported they were unharmed. Just two hours following this incident, another vessel, the 52,400 dwt Great Legend, also fell victim to an attack by five pirates in the same region, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by piracy in these waters.
