On the afternoon of May 25, 2024, the Panama Canal was the scene of an unfortunate oil spill linked to the container ship MSC Katya R. During its southbound journey from Cristobal to Guayaquil, the vessel experienced a spill at the lock gates, prompting immediate action to mitigate the environmental impact. As a result, one lane of the Miraflores locks was temporarily closed to maritime traffic, causing disruptions in operations. The Miraflores Visitor Center also remained shut on May 27 as cleanup efforts continued in the upper chamber of the locks. The MSC Katya R was detained in the lock, with the captain and chief engineer taken into custody for further investigation. The ship stayed at Balboa from May 26 until May 29 at 3 p.m. UTC, and later moored at Panama Anchorage located at coordinates 08° 52.89' N 079° 29.91' W.
