Oil Spill Incident at Yılport Gebze Due to MSC Katyayni Allision

Nov 19, 2018 13:19

On November 19, 2018, at 7:15 a.m., the cargo vessel MSC Katyayni, which operates routes between Piraeus and the Yılport Port in Izmit, unfortunately struck the dock at the Yılport Gebze Terminal while attempting to moor. This allision resulted in damage to a fuel tank located on the port side of the vessel, causing a significant oil leak into the port basin. In a rapid response to contain the situation, teams from Mare Deniz Temizliği were deployed to set up oil barriers around the affected area, preventing the spread of the pollution into the surrounding bay in the Dilovası district of Kocaeli. Additionally, a surveillance aircraft was dispatched to monitor the oil spill's extent, and Basin 2 of Yılport Port was secured with booms to mitigate any further environmental impact. Assistance during the operation was provided by the tugs Med XXVI (IMO: 9110389) and Efesan Port (IMO: 9777498). Following the incident, the MSC Katyayni was moved to Tuzla anchorage on November 24 for necessary repairs, accompanied by a thorough damage assessment of the vessel.
