On October 3, 2013, the German container vessel "Santa Balbina" was sailing from Thessaloniki to Malta when it received a request for assistance from the Italian Coastguard. The ship set course towards coordinates 35°59' N, 17°50' E, located approximately 130 nautical miles southeast of Capo Passero. At 2 a.m., the container ship successfully located a distressed fishing vessel carrying 63 Syrian migrants, comprising 39 men, 8 women, and 16 children ranging in age from six months to 70 years. The migrants had been stranded on the damaged boat for a week, battling adverse weather conditions while attempting to reach Italy from Alexandria. The crew of the "Santa Balbina" welcomed the migrants on board, providing them with essential supplies, including food and shelter. Following the rescue, the ship transferred the migrants to an Italian Coastguard boat on October 4, near Cape Passero, before continuing its journey to Marsaxlokk later that day.
