Successful Salvage Operations for the Bareli at Tanguy Anchorage
The salvage operation for the vessel 'Bareli' is making significant strides, with recent updates marking a notable success. On April 24, Shanghai Salvage Company effectively accomplished the separation of the ship’s stern and forward sections. The stern has now been safely towed to Tanguy Anchorage, significantly mitigating the risk of an oil spill. Remarkably, all oil has been removed from the double-bottom tanks, while the forward section remains stable on the seabed at the grounding site. Salvors have successfully recovered approximately 1,000 containers and 830 tons of fuel oil from the ship. However, about 300 tons of oil are still retained in the tanks of the stern, and the forward section has approximately 200 containers remaining in its cargo holds. 165 containers are currently unaccounted for, likely having sunk into the sea. The 'Bareli' was declared a total loss following its grounding on March 15, just outside Fuquing in Fujian Province, China.
Salvage Operations Intensify as Wreck of 'Bareli' Faces Splitting Threat
Salvage efforts on the grounded vessel 'Bareli' have been underway throughout the Easter holiday, despite the challenges posed by inclement weather and turbulent seas on April 6 and 7. The salvage team has reported progress, successfully removing 650 of the vessel's total 1,913 containers. Additionally, approximately 580 cubic meters of heavy fuel oil have been pumped from the ship's tanks to mitigate environmental risks. As conditions remain tense, operators are closely monitoring the structure of the ship, which has shown signs of distress due to considerable tidal activity affecting its double-bottom hull. This has raised concerns that the stern may separate from the bow, a scenario the salvage team is actively preparing for to ensure pollution control and ship stability. Since the 'Bareli' ran aground off Fuquing, China, on March 15, the Shanghai Salvage Company has deployed their most skilled personnel to handle the operation and address any potential pollution threats. Currently in its third week of salvage efforts, 15 of the 21 crew members have been successfully repatriated. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore began interviewing the crew members in Singapore starting April 9, as investigations continue regarding the incident.
Successful Recovery Efforts on ‘Bareli’ as Heavy Fuel Oil Drained and Crew Repatriated
By March 30, 300 metric tonnes of heavy fuel oil, along with approximately 350 containers, were successfully extracted from the vessel 'Bareli.' Fortunately, no oil spills have been reported in recent days. A minor leak of about 30 tonnes of heavy fuel oil from one of the ship’s oil tanks is being addressed as it is removed from a cargo hold. The vessel's owner, through its insurance provider Gard, is actively collaborating with the Fujian Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) to assume control of the salvage operations and is finalizing a contract with Shanghai Salvage. In related news, two additional crew members have been repatriated, leaving 16 crew members expected to be released in the near future.
