Heroic Rescue by MSC Livorno: Crew Saved from Flaming Fishing Vessel
The container ship MSC Livorno exhibited extraordinary bravery and quick action on its journey from Yantian to Suez, successfully rescuing a fishing vessel's crew off the coast of Vietnam. The dramatic incident unfolded around 9 a.m. when an emergency alert was received regarding an explosion involving a gas cylinder aboard the fishing vessel. As flames engulfed the boat, four crew members sustained serious burns. Fortunately, the MSC Livorno was just 40 kilometers away from the accident site and promptly altered its course to aid the beleaguered crew. Upon arrival, the massive container ship maneuvered carefully, relying solely on its bow thrusters to maintain position. In a remarkable display of coordination, the first officer was lowered onto the deck of the distressed fishing vessel using a crane, while the injured crewmembers were hoisted aboard the MSC Livorno with a stretcher. After several hours of assisting the victims, a Vietnamese ship equipped with a doctor arrived to take over the transport of the injured fishermen. The MSC Livorno then continued on its voyage and is slated to dock in Hamburg on July 7, 2011.
