E.R. New York Secured by Tug Boats After Stern Mooring Failure in Timaru

Feb 04, 2015 07:27

In a dramatic turn of events at Timaru Port, the 260-meter container ship E.R. New York experienced a stern mooring failure due to fierce northwesterly winds around 11:30 a.m. this morning. The incident resulted in the snapping of a bollard as reported by Phil Melhopt, Chief Executive of PrimePort. The port recorded gusts reaching 50 knots, prompting an immediate response from tug boats Aoraki and Timaru, along with the pilot launch Ohau. These vessels worked swiftly to push the Liberian-flagged container ship back against the dock, ensuring the safety of the vessel and the port. Melhopt commended the exceptional performance of the pilot and marine crew, attributing their rapid reaction to the prevention of a potentially severe situation. In light of the incident, PrimePort will be conducting a thorough investigation and will need to repair the damaged bollard. The Canterbury Harbourmaster has also been notified of the occurrence. Witnessing the ship's distress, hydraulic engineer Craig Atwill remarked, “This could be bad,” but he soon praised the quick actions of the tugs and pilot launch in securing the ship. At the time of the mooring failure, the E.R. New York was fully loaded and awaiting a lull in the winds before it could set sail. Melhopt noted that the vessel's departure now hinges on weather conditions, which could potentially impact the docking schedule of incoming ships.
