On November 4, 2011, the cargo vessel 'Te Hsing', involved in a tragic collision with the Liberian-registered ship 'Taroko', was located following an extensive search. The accident, which occurred on October 28, 2011, off the coast of Penghu Island, resulted in the loss of two lives. The collision took place around 3:30 a.m. approximately 15 nautical miles west-northwest of Penghu. After departing from Kaohsiung, the 'Te Hsing' was en route to Kinmen Island when it collided with 'Taroko'. Intensive Search Continues for Missing Crew Members of 'Teh-hsing' After Collision

Oct 28, 2011 22:28

As of October 29, 2011, a comprehensive joint sea and air search and rescue operation remains active, focusing on the search for the missing crew members from the Taiwanese vessel 'Teh-hsing (εΎ·θˆˆθ™Ÿ)'. This ship was engaged in transporting materials between Kaohsiung and Kinmen Island for the Taiwan military. After the tragic collision, naval forces are scouring the waters in hopes of locating the two missing individuals. Sadly, the incident claimed the lives of the chief engineer, a Taiwanese national, and an Indonesian mechanic aboard the 'Teh-hsing'. The missing persons include the ship’s Taiwanese captain and an Indonesian junior engineer. The 'Teh-hsing' broke apart and sank approximately 15 minutes after being struck amidship on October 28 at 1 a.m. In response to the collision, the 'Taroko' was redirected to Penghu, where local Coast Patrol authorities are conducting an investigation. The Ministry of National Defense swiftly authorized an S-70C 'Seagull' helicopter to depart from an air force base in Chiayi, aiming for an area roughly 22 nautical miles northwest of the Penghu Islands. Nine survivors who managed to abandon ship immediately following the impact were successfully rescued from the sea by this helicopter. In parallel, additional helicopters from the National Search and Rescue Centers have completed nine sorties over the affected region, while two Navy vessels have also been deployed to aid in the ongoing search efforts.
