Stowaways Undertake Perilous Ocean Journey on MSC Marta's Rudder

Jul 13, 2023 11:00

In a remarkable incident, the Spanish Coast Guard, alongside local authorities in the Canary Islands, discovered two stowaways who had made a daring attempt to reach Europe by clinging onto the rudder of the 'MSC Marta'. The ship arrived in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on July 10, 2023, after a grueling journey of over 2,700 nautical miles originating from Lomé, Togo. The two young Nigerian men, aged 18 and 22, were found in a precarious resting position atop the rudder, just one foot above the ocean. They had endured six days of extreme hardships with no shelter and limited space. The ‘MSC Marta’ docked at the container terminal around 11:30 PM UTC, as part of its regular route that connects Africa to Europe via the Canary Islands. During a routine patrol, the Spanish Coast Guard's Salvamento Marítimo deployed their vessel 'Nunki', which detected the shivering stowaways on the rudder during a thorough inspection. A zodiac was dispatched, and the two young men were promptly rescued and taken on board for medical evaluation. Investigations revealed that they had boarded the vessel on July 2 while it was docked in Lagos. Following a short stop in Lomé for container handling on July 3-4, the ship made the extensive sea voyage toward the Canary Islands, maintaining the two stowaways' remarkable journey. After being treated at the hospital overnight, the men were returned to the ship the following morning, July 11. Under Spanish law, the ship is responsible for facilitating the removal of illegal migrants and arranging for their return to their home countries. Interestingly, the stowaways could have sought asylum in Spain, which would have allowed them to stay in the Canary Islands. However, it is believed that their ultimate destination was Italy, where they have family connections, leading them to potentially pursue asylum there instead. The 'MSC Marta' departed on July 11, with a new journey to the port of Gioia Tauro, scheduled to arrive on July 15. Whether the men will opt for asylum or remain on the vessel until it reaches Nigeria remains uncertain.

Emergency Medivac for Injured Sailors Aboard MSC Marta Near Cayenne

Jan 31, 2019 11:59

On January 28, 2019, a distressing incident unfolded aboard the MSC Marta while it was en route from the Dominican Republic to Santos. At approximately 9:55 p.m., the CROSS Antilles-Guyane received an urgent call regarding injuries sustained by two crew members. The source of the chaos was a Serbo-Croatian crew member who went on a rampage, injuring three other crew members, including a chef, an engineer, and a fitter. The chef's condition necessitated immediate medical intervention. In response, the CROSS West Indies-Guyana coordinated a telemedical consultation with a physician based in Toulouse, confirming the need for a medical evacuation. Subsequently, the MSC Marta altered its course to divert to Cayenne, situated roughly 200 nautical miles from their original route. In tandem, a Puma helicopter from the Armed Forces in French Guiana and a medical team from SAMU were dispatched to assist. The injured sailor was successfully airlifted 70 nautical miles from the coast of Guyana and transported to Cayenne for further medical care at 5:35 a.m. on January 29. Meanwhile, the two other injured crew members chose to remain on board the vessel. All three injured sailors hailed from Montenegro. The assailant was subdued and isolated by fellow crew members and was scheduled for handover to police authorities upon the MSC Marta's arrival in Santos.
