Pirate Boarding Attempt Foiled Near Togo
On January 13, 2020, a harrowing incident unfolded off the coast of Togo when a group of at least eight pirates attempted to board the 'MSC Nederland.' The vessel was anchored in position 06 05 09N, 001 19 03E, roughly three nautical miles from the bustling port of Lome. As the captain promptly raised the alarm, a distress signal was sent out indicating that pirates in a nearby boat were aggressively throwing ropes and hooks in an effort to gain access. In a decisive response, the entire crew of the MSC Nederland gathered safely in the citadel, a secure area designed for such emergencies. Swift action from a Togolese navy patrol vessel followed, arriving on the scene within 40 minutes of the distress call. However, it took nearly four hours for naval officers to board the ship, during which time they requested the crew to exit the citadel and lower the pilot ladder. The crew, prioritizing their safety, declined to comply until the following morning. Fortunately, the pirates were unsuccessful in their boarding attempt, and both the crew and their vessel remained unharmed. The MSC Nederland, which had departed from Conakry on January 9, successfully docked in Lome at 12:50 AM on January 14.
