MSC Olia Detained by Malaysia Maritime for Anchoring Violation

May 22, 2025 19:12

On May 16, 2025, the Malaysian Maritime Authority took action to detain the container ship 'MSC Olia', which had 23 crew members aboard. The intervention followed a routine inspection by maritime officials who discovered that the ship's captain, a 44-year-old Russian citizen, had not provided the necessary documents for anchoring permission. As a result, the captain and the second engineer were escorted to the Selangor State Maritime headquarters for further questioning and investigation. If found guilty of the infraction, they could face penalties that include a fine of up to $23,000, a possible two-year prison sentence, or both. The Area Control Centre had earlier flagged the ship as suspicious and began to monitor its movements at approximately 9:20 AM local time. By 1:20 PM, the container ship was found to be stationary about 22.5 nautical miles southwest of Sekinchan, situated north of Kuala Lumpur in the Malacca Strait. The 'MSC Olia' was en route from Jakarta and was scheduled to arrive in Singapore on May 17. Before its detention, the vessel had docked in Port Klang.
